What Does It Mean To BE Perfect?

“Perfection is not about doing; it is about being!” – Apostle Mudassa Gaymes

According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, the meaning of the word perfect include the following definitions:

  • having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics
  • free from flaw or defect in condition or quality
  • absolute; complete
  • precisely accurate; exact

The Bible states in Matthew 5:48,

“Therefore, be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

As I reflected on this scripture, the question that came to mind was “Is it humanly possible for any one of us to be perfect?”. I have often heard people make the following statements: no one is perfect and/or only God alone is perfect. As I look around me and within me, these statements seem to be quite true. So I wondered, “If no one as a human can be perfect, then what can Yeshua mean when he said that we should be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect? In search of an answer, I started exploring the concept of perfection.

In studying, I was taken back to the beginning. If we go back to the creation of man in the book of Genesis, we will see that we were created in the perfect image and likeness of YHVH. We were created as three parts of a whole – spirit, soul and body. We are “a spirit that has a soul and lives in a body”. Our spirit is who we are;  it is perfect and should be primary in our lives. We understand that the fall of man introduced sin, contamination and death. In so doing, our spirit became secondary to our soul and body. Thus, we fulfill the desires of soul and body first instead of our spirit.

However, Messiah Yeshua came and brought restoration through His death, burial and resurrection so that we can have access to our original created design – so that we can be who we are. Now the order has been restored and we can be realigned to being spirit first. This is what it means to be perfect. Hence, being perfect is not what we do but who we are. The command for us to be perfect simply means that we should get back to the original created design that the LORD made us to be – back to being His image, back to being like Him, back to operating as a spirit who has a soul and lives in a body.

Let us, then, realign our self back to our original created design and be perfect!
